Alessandro Canto, Quality Control Operator at the #LeonardoAeronautics site in Venegono (Varese, Italy), has turned a lifelong passion into a profession. During his childhood, he watched planes fly overhead near his home, close to Malpensa airport, wondering how such enormous, heavy objects could move so quickly through the sky. After earning a diploma in fixed-wing aircraft assembly from the ITS Academy in Somma Lombardo (Varese), Alessandro first connected with Leonardo six months before completing his course, in early 2023, through an internship at the Workshop Support Equipment and Final Assembly Line 346 at the Venegono site. Even before finishing at the ITS Academy, he was offered a job as an aircraft assembler – giving him the opportunity to do what he loves most: “getting my hands dirty and doing practical work,” such as installing avionics systems and assisting with functional avionics and electronic testing. Since May 2024, he has embarked on a new experience as a Quality Control Operator, working on certification tests for the #M345 aircraft, developed for basic and advanced training of military pilots from Italy and partner countries. A basketball enthusiast, Alessandro sees himself as someone still learning and growing – keen to absorb knowledge from more experienced Leonardo colleagues. Jorge Tamarit Degenhardt, Chief Executive Officer of #Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH, has welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing between the Government of the Republic of Türkiye and the Government of the United Kingdom.? ?? Yasar Güler, Turkish Minister of National Defence, and John Healey, UK Secretary of State for Defence, signed the MoU at the IDEF defence trade event in Istanbul earlier today. The MoU is the first step towards Türkiye’s potential purchase of the Eurofighter Typhoon jet.? ?? The UK's combat air industry took a major leap forward yesterday as Defence Minister Maria Eagle opened the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) flagship headquarters in Reading. This crucial milestone supports the delivery of a supersonic stealth fighter jet equipped with cutting-edge technologies. The GCAP programme supports over 3,500 jobs and 1,000 apprenticeships in the UK. The new multinational headquarters brings us together with Japan and Italy in this innovative collaborative project. Edgewing, a new joint venture formed by BAE Systems, Leonardo, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. Ltd, will lead on design and development. Secretary of State for Defence John Healey also held a virtual meeting in parallel with his Italian and Japanese counterparts, Guido Crosetto and Gen Nakatani, to discuss progress of the GCAP programme. Preparing future pilots to operate fourth and fifth generation fighter aircraft through an innovative training model focused on Phase IV of the syllabus – the pre-operational phase – is the mission of the International Flight Training School (#IFTS), Italy’s advanced training centre for military pilots from across the globe, established in 2018 as a strategic collaboration between the Italian Air Force - Aeronautica Militare and Leonardo. Spanning over 35,000 square metres of covered space within an area of more than 130,000 square metres, the IFTS campus offers a unique integration of live and virtual training. At the heart of this cutting-edge ecosystem is the #M346 (#T346A), with a fleet of 22 aircraft assigned to the school, and the use of Live, Virtual and Constructive (#LVC) technology. ? Underscoring the strategic importance of IFTS to Italy and international defence, the Decimomannu (Cagliari, Italy) base hosted today the military pilot wings graduation ceremony, attended by the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella. The event celebrated not only the achievements of the new pilots, but also the critical role played by the academy in shaping the next generation of military aviators. ?
